Downtown holds the Capitol. Every other clock in town sits a few minutes from it in a different direction.
Downtown Tallahassee is compact, and the Florida Capitol anchors it: a 22-story tower, one of the tallest state capitol buildings in the country, and the building every agency staffer, lobbyist, and reception crew in town works around once session opens. West of the Capitol sits Florida State University and the restaurant-and-bar strip of CollegeTown, while a few minutes south, Florida A&M University runs a campus, an athletics program, and a commencement calendar that never overlaps with FSU's. Midtown carries the corporate and nonprofit gala circuit north of downtown, and the Railroad Square Art District, an arts-and-maker district that has held its monthly First Friday festival for decades, sits south near FAMU's edge of town.
None of that lines up into a single planning window. Florida's Legislature convenes the second Tuesday after the first Monday in January in even years and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March in odd years, a 60-day session on paper. Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, downtown. A 12,500-seat arena with more than 54,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space, open since 1977. It doubles as FSU's commencement hall, so a spring graduation weekend can book the same floor a touring concert used days earlier.
Doak Campbell Stadium and Bragg Memorial Stadium. FSU's Bobby Bowden Field seats 67,277 after its 2024-2025 renovation, and FAMU's Ken Riley Field seats 19,633 a few miles south. Both fill on their own home schedule, and FAMU's Homecoming sells out its house often enough that a recent game routed the overflow crowd to a big screen.
Railroad Square and CollegeTown. Railroad Square's monthly First Friday festival draws an arts-district crowd near FAMU's edge of town, while CollegeTown's restaurant and bar strip next to FSU carries the game-day and weeknight crowd on the opposite side of downtown.

Springtime Tallahassee, a free spring festival running since 1967, is one of the largest in the Southeast and closes several downtown blocks for a parade and a music festival. The rest of the year rounds out with concerts at the Adderley Amphitheater in Cascades Park, meetings drawn in by the state agencies headquartered downtown, and the standard run of private and nonprofit events.
