Now it's the road race that matters most for staffing purposes: the Boilermaker started with 876 runners in 1978 and has grown into a 20,000-person week every July that the arena, the theater, and every other downtown venue schedule around, not the other way.

02The Map
One race defines the map more than any neighborhood does.
Downtown, along Genesee and Oriskany streets, holds the Adirondack Bank Center and the Stanley Theatre a few blocks apart, plus the offices left from Utica's mill and manufacturing era. The Mohawk River runs just north of downtown, and Utica University's campus, south of downtown, adds its own steady calendar on top of the arena's Division III hockey tenancy.
But the map that actually matters every July is the Boilermaker course itself, threading east from downtown out to Roscoe Conkling Park and back, closing streets and pulling in 20,000 runners, spectators, and volunteers for a week most other Utica orders plan entirely around.

Venue and logistics notes
Adirondack Bank Center. 5,700-seat concert arena at 400 Oriskany Street West, home to the Utica Comets and Utica University hockey, with its own rodeo, expo, and tournament calendar beyond hockey nights.
The Stanley Theatre. A 2,963-seat 1928 movie palace on Genesee Street, one of only three surviving Thomas Lamb theaters upstate, running Broadway and concert dates a few blocks from the arena.
Boilermaker course. Streets close across the eastern side of the city for race morning; crew and vendor staging has to work around the closures, not through them.
Mohawk River. Runs along downtown's north edge; most event venues sit south of it, so river crossings rarely factor into routing the way they do in river-split cities.

In New York, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and New York Workers' Compensation Law (WKC ch. 67).
