The nickname is a century old. The arena isn't.
Say "Hamilton" outside the city and steel comes up before anything else does, and the reputation is earned: ArcelorMittal Dofasco still ships about 4.5 million tons of steel a year from inside the city limits, and Stelco still runs its head office a few minutes from downtown. What that reputation misses is the calendar. The arena where Copps Coliseum and then FirstOntario Centre used to stand reopened in November 2025 as the $300-million TD Coliseum, the Tiger-Cats play in a stadium rebuilt from the ground up in 2014, and the convention floor downtown has been booking events since 1981. Hamilton sits about 45 minutes down the QEW from Toronto and draws on a lot of the same labor pool, but it runs its own rate card, its own lead times, and its own event calendar. This is not a smaller Toronto, and it isn't staffed like one.

02The Map
The Mountain splits the city before any neighborhood does.
Hamilton runs from the harbour at the bottom up the Niagara Escarpment, which locals just call the Mountain, to the upper city on top of it, a bigger dividing line than any single street. Downtown sits in the lower city by the water, where the Hamilton Convention Centre, FirstOntario Concert Hall, and the Art Gallery of Hamilton share one connected block around Summers Lane, walkable to Lloyd D. Jackson Square and the Sheraton. A few blocks north, James Street North is the arts strip that hosts Supercrawl every September and anchors the Hamilton Fringe Festival's street fair every July. East along Melrose Avenue, the stadium district holds Hamilton Stadium, home to the Tiger-Cats and Forge FC. West, Westdale sits next to McMaster University, which runs its own conference calendar most of the year. South, up the escarpment, Hamilton Mountain is a market of its own, with a real climb between it and anything below.
None of this geography is new, but the buildings on it are newer than the city's reputation suggests. TD Coliseum reopened under new ownership and a new name in November 2025 after a $300 million rebuild; Hamilton Stadium replaced the old Ivor Wynne Stadium on the same site in 2014. Meanwhile ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Stelco, the two companies that earned Hamilton the name Steel City, still operate inside city limits, Dofasco still making primary steel, Stelco's Hamilton Works now running coke ovens and finishing while its blast-furnace work has shifted to its Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke. Staffing this market means planning around a modern, recently rebuilt venue base sitting inside an old industrial city, not choosing between the two.

Venue and logistics notes
Hamilton Convention Centre, downtown. One Summers Lane, open since 1981 and directly connected to FirstOntario Concert Hall, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and Lloyd D. Jackson Square, a genuinely walkable cluster, so a multi-venue order can move crew on foot rather than across town.
TD Coliseum, York Boulevard. Reopened November 2025 after a $300 million renovation (Copps Coliseum, then FirstOntario Centre before that); 18,000 for concerts, and the new home of the Hamilton Hammers AHL club from October 2026 and PWHL Hamilton from the 2026-27 season.
Hamilton Stadium, Melrose Avenue North. Built in 2014 on the site of the old Ivor Wynne Stadium; 23,218 seats, home to the CFL's Tiger-Cats and the CPL's Forge FC. The Tiger-Cats host the Toronto Argonauts here on July 18, 2026, because Toronto's own stadium is booked for the FIFA World Cup.

03What We Staff
Four categories carry most of the calendar, and two of the venues are barely a year old.
Sports and concerts lead, split across two rebuilt venues: Hamilton Stadium's Tiger-Cats and Forge FC dates, and TD Coliseum's concert calendar plus its incoming tenants, the Hamilton Hammers (AHL) and PWHL Hamilton. Conventions and corporate events come next, filling the Hamilton Convention Centre downtown and McMaster University's own meeting and conference space out in Westdale.
Arts festivals are the summer-into-fall run: the Hamilton Fringe Festival's 12 days of multi-venue theatre every July, then Supercrawl's free street festival on James Street North every September. Performing arts and galas fill FirstOntario Concert Hall, home to the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Hamilton, and the Art Gallery of Hamilton next door. Brand activations round out the rest.

Hamilton's calendar peaks in the fall: the Tiger-Cats' CFL season runs deep into it at Hamilton Stadium, Supercrawl fills James Street North every September, and TD Coliseum is running its first full concert and sports season since its $300-million rebuild. July carries a smaller peak of its own around the 12-day Hamilton Fringe Festival. None of those dates are set around Toronto's calendar; Hamilton's peak season is driven by its own stadium, its own arena, and its own festivals.
06The Rate
One Ontario rate, licensed and built in.
The number that comes back already has Ontario's rules built into it, not stacked on top of it afterward. Every rate carries the wage, vacation pay, statutory holiday pay, WSIB premiums, and general liability an agency has to carry before it can even hold the operating licence the province has required of temporary help agencies since July 1, 2024. Ontario's general minimum wage is CAD $17.60 an hour; every role on this page starts well above that floor.

07The Fine Print
Ontario's staffing rules have their own teeth.
In Ontario, the expensive shortcut is treating event staff as misclassified contractors instead of employees: back pay, penalties, and joint-liability exposure under Ontario Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA).
TempGuru runs every worker as a W-2 employee through a vetted partner agency that acts as the employer of record, carrying the workers' comp, general liability, and payroll taxes on each one. Classification and payroll responsibility sits with that employing agency; your own obligations can still depend on how you direct the work and on applicable law. As W-2 employees, the crew also fall under the workplace protections, including Ontario Human Rights Code, that apply to the agency's other staff.

09A Sample Plan

Here's a sample plan for a peak Saturday during the Hamilton Fringe Festival, the 12-day, 50-plus-company theatre festival that spreads more than 400 performances across 16-plus downtown venues every July, from Mills Hardware and Theatre Aquarius Studio to the Gasworks and the free Fringe Boulevard street fair on King William at James North. Box office and front-of-house crew cover the ticketed venues, a Boulevard crew runs wayfinding and vendor support on the street itself, load-in and tech crew move between venue clusters as show blocks change over, and guest services handle house management at the smaller rooms.
Thirty-four people, spread across sixteen-plus buildings instead of one, is the actual planning problem. Four team leads, each running a cluster of venues and carrying a radio, replace the single stage manager a one-building event would use, because the next problem is as likely to be two blocks away as it is next door.
