W-2 crews for the Inland Northwest's one hub: a falls-cut downtown, one regional airport, and no bigger neighboring market to borrow backup crew from.
Scroll. It gets specific.01The Ground Truth
Spokane is the hub for the whole Inland Northwest, and it runs on its own.
East of the Cascades, on the dry side of Washington, Spokane sits where the Spokane River drops over its falls in the middle of downtown. One regional airport serves the market, and there is no comparably sized metro within a few hours in any direction. When Hoopfest closes 40-plus blocks downtown at the end of June or a winter storm shuts a mountain pass, the crew on the ground here is the crew available; nothing gets trucked in overnight from a bigger city next door.
Quick Answer
In Spokane, WA, most event roles fall between $32 and $38 an hour; team leads run $42 to $48, brand ambassadors $48.50 to $55.50, and specialized work like bar and AV up to $68.50. The number is all-in: W-2 pay, workers' comp, general liability, and payroll taxes, no add-ons.
One coordinator runs your order. Standard confirmation is 24 to 48 hours. Typical booking window is 2 to 4 weeks. Urgent orders move in 2 to 3 days, and Hoopfest weekend in late June books out further ahead than anything else on the Spokane calendar.
02The Map
Four areas, one river through the middle, one road out to the rest of the state.
Riverfront core is the compact downtown wedge where the falls drop through Riverfront Park; Numerica Veterans Arena, the Convention Center, First Interstate Center for the Arts, and The Podium all sit within a few blocks of each other and of the falls itself. Spokane Valley, a separate incorporated city east on I-90, runs its own event floor at CenterPlace Regional Event Center and carries the region's warehouse and big-box retail corridor. Gonzaga and the University District, just northeast across the river, keep a full basketball calendar at the McCarthey Athletic Center on top of downtown's. West Plains, southwest toward the airport, holds Spokane International and, a few miles further out, Fairchild Air Force Base.
The constraint here isn't distance the way it is in a sprawling metro; it's isolation. Spokane is the only sizeable market for a long stretch in any direction, so a plan can't lean on a bigger neighboring city for overflow crew or a rental house's spare inventory on short notice. We build the bench here, in Spokane, rather than planning around a truck arriving from somewhere else.
"There's no bigger neighboring market to call for backup crew. What's here is what you get, so we build deep in Spokane instead of planning around a truck from somewhere else."Megan Hayward, Founder & CEO, TempGuru
Venue and logistics notes
Riverfront core, downtown. Numerica Veterans Arena, the Convention Center, First Interstate Center for the Arts, and The Podium sit close enough for one crew to cover a game night, a trade show, and a concert in the same evening. Street closures around the falls for a festival are the main scheduling wrinkle.
Spokane Valley. A separate incorporated city east on I-90, with its own event floor at CenterPlace Regional Event Center and the region's warehouse district. Orders here run on their own timeline from downtown, not as an afterthought tacked on.
Gonzaga and the University District. The McCarthey Athletic Center runs its own basketball calendar a couple of miles northeast of downtown, across the river; its game nights sit alongside, not in competition with, the arena's separate Chiefs schedule.
West Plains and the airport corridor. Spokane International Airport and Fairchild Air Force Base sit roughly 10 to 12 miles southwest of downtown. Base-adjacent work needs sponsor approval and gate clearance built into the timeline, a separate step from any downtown venue.
03What We Staff
What actually books here.
Five categories cover most Spokane orders. Sports and concerts lead: Spokane Chiefs games and touring shows at Numerica Veterans Arena, plus track and multi-sport events at The Podium. Conventions and trade shows need registration desks, floor crews, and freight hands at the Convention Center.
Corporate events run check-in, hosts, and setup for meetings and dinners across downtown and Spokane Valley. Street festivals, Hoopfest above all, bring outdoor, multi-block work with no single building to anchor it. Brand activations want ambassadors who can hold a script at a sponsor booth.
04The Math
A tournament this size is a grid of orders, not one headcount.
Read the roster by station: 8 on setup and load-in, 3 leads splitting the rest at about 10 each out of 32 billable. Stagger the calls so nobody is paid to wait around.
05The Clock
The passes can close before the crew does.
Book early and you lock the crew and the rate. Spokane's peak runs from Hoopfest in late June, the region's single largest event, through the fall opening of the Spokane Chiefs' WHL season and Gonzaga's basketball calendar, both weighted toward winter weekends. Snow can close the mountain passes into and out of the market from November through March, which is the seasonal risk here in place of a coastal storm season.
06The Rate
One rate per role, no city-line surprises.
Ask for a role in Spokane and one number comes back. It already carries the W-2 wage, workers' comp, general liability, and payroll taxes, so the figure you approve is the figure on the invoice. Washington's $17.13 statewide minimum wage is the floor these rates sit on here, not a separate city ordinance like Seattle's, since Spokane has never passed one of its own.
| Role | Rate | Min shift |
|---|---|---|
| General labor / setup | $32–$38/hr | 4 hrs |
| Registration | $32–$38/hr | 4 hrs |
| Warehouse / logistics | $32–$38/hr | 4 hrs |
| Brand ambassadors | $48.50–$55.50/hr | 4 hrs |
| Team leads / supervisors | $42–$48/hr | 4 hrs |
| Specialized (bar, AV) | $52.50–$68.50/hr | 4 hrs |
Washington minimum wage is $17.13/hr. Every worker on this page is W-2, not 1099.

07The Fine Print
W-2 matters more when there's no backup bench next door.
In Washington, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and Washington Industrial Insurance Act (Title 51 RCW).
TempGuru runs every worker as a W-2 employee through a vetted partner agency that acts as the employer of record, carrying the workers' comp, general liability, and payroll taxes on each one. Classification and payroll responsibility sits with that employing agency; your own obligations can still depend on how you direct the work and on applicable law. As W-2 employees, the crew also fall under the workplace protections, including Washington Law Against Discrimination (RCW 49.60), that apply to the agency's other staff.
- W-2 employment, not 1099
- Workers' compensation insurance
- General liability coverage
- Payroll taxes: FICA, FUTA, SUTA
08The Model
One coordinator, because there's no second market to call.
You talk to one coordinator. Behind them, TempGuru pulls vetted W-2 crews from a roster of partner agencies and holds the relationships and the paperwork.
One coordinator, one crew, one invoice. When I-90 or a mountain pass closes in a January storm, there's no bigger city three hours away to truck in backup crew. One coordinator working the local bench is what keeps the shift covered.
| The moment | Gig app | TempGuru |
|---|---|---|
| Someone no-shows at 6 a.m. | A support ticket | A coordinator with a name |
| Workers’ comp | Check the fine print | In the rate |
| Classification & payroll | Yours to sort out | The partner agency’s, as employer of record |
The difference shows up at 6 a.m., not in the demo.
09A Sample Plan
An illustrative staffing order.
Here's a sample plan for a Hoopfest weekend order, the last weekend of June, when the tournament closes roughly 40-plus blocks of downtown Spokane for more than 450 courts, 6,000-plus teams, and an estimated 225,000 attendees. The plan to the left is the shape of a single zone's crew inside that footprint: a ten-person build crew tapes courts and sets barricades Thursday morning, eight general labor cover vendor tents and sponsor booths Friday, six on guest services work wayfinding across the closed-street grid by Saturday morning, five ambassadors staff sponsor activations along the route, and three team leads split the zone with a floater between them.
Every call time in this plan comes off the tournament's own city street-closure permit, not a floor plan, because there's no single building to key off. Thirty-two billable people across one zone of a tournament that spans the whole downtown grid, booked as one order off a single coordinator's sheet.
10Your Move
The only hub for a long stretch, staffed like one.
Cheaper crews aren't hard to find in a market this size. The rare one can build a tournament's worth of closed-street courts one week and staff a hockey game the next, work the Convention Center floor and a Hoopfest zone without missing a call time, every worker W-2, the whole thing on one coordinator's sheet. In Spokane there's no bigger neighboring market to hand the overflow to, so that bench gets built here, not borrowed. That's the order we take.
