The San Diego Convention Center runs 615,701 square feet of exhibit space on the downtown waterfront, and several times a year that is not enough: Comic-Con week alone spills activations across the Gaslamp Quarter, into Petco Park, and onto the bayfront hotel properties until downtown itself is the venue. That spillover is what a staffing plan here has to price. 02The Map
A waterfront core, a valley stadium, and a bay that works.
Downtown carries most of the calendar in one walkable arc. The Convention Center fronts the bay at Harbor Drive; the Gaslamp Quarter's sixteen-plus blocks of hotels, venues, and nightlife start directly across the street; and Petco Park sits one block further into East Village, close enough that ballpark concerts, convention floors, and Gaslamp activations share sidewalks, parking, and crew on the same night.
Two more zones round out the map. Mission Valley, ten minutes up the 163, holds Snapdragon Stadium, a 35,000-seat building juggling three tenants, Aztec football, San Diego FC, and San Diego Wave FC, plus concerts. And the Embarcadero north of the Convention Center runs the working bay: two cruise terminals whose season, roughly September through May, puts ship-turnaround days onto the same waterfront streets convention freight uses.

Venue and logistics notes
San Diego Convention Center, Harbor Drive. 615,701 square feet of exhibit space, divisible into seven halls, plus the 90,000-square-foot Sails Pavilion. Waterfront freight shares Harbor Drive with everything else on the bay, so load-in windows get set against the street, not just the dock.
Petco Park and East Village. About 42,000 seats a block from the Gaslamp, with a year-round non-baseball slate of stadium concerts and special events. On overlap nights, ballpark crowds and convention traffic hit the same intersections.
Snapdragon Stadium, Mission Valley. 35,000 seats, SDSU-owned and OVG360-managed, with three 2026 tenants plus concerts and festivals. Its calendar density means short turnarounds between events are normal, not exceptional.
The Embarcadero cruise terminals. B Street Pier and Broadway Pier booked 107 voyages and roughly 389,000 passengers for the 2025-26 season, concentrated September through May. A turnaround morning changes traffic on the exact streets convention freight needs.
03What We Staff
What the calendar actually holds.
Conventions and trade shows are the anchor tenant of this market, from medical meetings to the July week when Comic-Con turns downtown inside out. Sports and stadium events stack next: Padres dates and ballpark concerts at Petco, plus Snapdragon's three-tenant calendar in Mission Valley.
Convention-adjacent activations are their own category here, brand takeovers of Gaslamp storefronts, hotel lawns, and rooftops timed to whatever is in the hall. Corporate events and festivals fill the rest, riding a climate that keeps outdoor work viable essentially year-round, with cruise-day hospitality on the Embarcadero through the fall-to-spring season.

Book early and you lock the crew and the rate. San Diego's climate keeps event work running all year, so the pressure points are calendar collisions rather than seasons: Comic-Con week in late July books the region's crew pool months ahead, the convention calendar barely pauses otherwise, and from September through May cruise-turnaround mornings land on the same waterfront streets the hall's freight uses.
06The Rate

Two local laws sit under every San Diego rate. The city's Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance sets a $17.75 floor inside city limits, a dollar under nothing, well above California's $16.90, and a separate hospitality ordinance effective July 1, 2026 pushes covered event centers to $21.06. The bands below carry the governing floor, the W-2 payroll load, workers' comp, liability, and the state's daily-overtime math in one number per role; whether a specific venue falls under the hospitality ordinance is checked per booking, because that answer belongs in the quote, not as a surprise later.

07The Fine Print
Two city wage ordinances, one daily overtime clock.
In California, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and California workers' compensation law (Labor Code §3700). Under Labor Code §510, California pays overtime on a daily clock: past 8 hours in a workday it is time-and-a-half, past 12 it is double time, and a seventh straight day in the workweek earns its own premium. During a convention week that swallows downtown, the same badge-line and floor crews tend to run long consecutive days, which is exactly the pattern the daily rules were written for.

A three-day medical meeting, 12,000 attendees, is a typical large San Diego order, and it never stays in one building. The plan to the left covers the Convention Center plus evening receptions at two bayfront hotels: ten registration staff opening badge lines at 6:30, six general labor in at 5 for the hall and the daily resets, five guest services walking attendees between the hall and the offsites, four ambassadors on the sponsor floor, three team leads, one per building and one floating.
