02The Map

Downtown Palm Springs along Palm Canyon Drive is the walkable core, and every Thursday night VillageFest closes the street itself for a fair of more than 180 vendors, a recurring closure any downtown event plan has to schedule around. The Convention Center district sits just east of downtown: 261,000 square feet of flexible space at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the Oasis Exhibit Hall, Primrose Ballroom, and outdoor Jackie Lee Houston Plaza carrying the winter group business. The Uptown Design District north of downtown holds the galleries and showrooms that swell during Modernism Week, and the South Palm Canyon resort corridor runs the hotel-buyout and private-estate work south of the core.
The planning variable here is season and clock, not distance. A January conference runs on a normal agenda. Venue and logistics notes
Palm Springs Convention Center. 261,000 square feet of flexible meeting space just east of downtown, anchored by the Oasis Exhibit Hall and Primrose Ballroom, plus the outdoor Jackie Lee Houston Plaza. Winter and spring conference groups are the core book here; summer programs lean on the indoor rooms.
VillageFest, Palm Canyon Drive. The Thursday-night downtown street fair, more than 180 vendors, 7 to 10 p.m. in summer. It is a street closure that recurs 52 times a year, which makes Thursday the one downtown night you route trucks and activations around, not through.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The world's largest rotating tramcars climb Chino Canyon to a Mountain Station at 8,516 feet in about ten minutes. Events up top move staff, gear, and product on the tram's schedule, so call times are set backwards from the car you need to be on.
Resort and estate buyouts. Corporate groups take whole properties along the South Palm Canyon corridor and beyond in season. Buyout work is house-rules work: pool decks, lawns, and ballrooms on one property, with the client's brand standards layered over the hotel's.

07The Fine Print
Desert schedules bend; California's daily-overtime clock does not.
In California, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and California Labor Code §3700 (mandatory workers' compensation coverage). Labor Code §510 runs overtime on the workday clock: hour eight of a single day earns time and a half and hour twelve earns double time, with a seventh straight day starting at overtime. In summer Palm Springs, where a crew loads in before sunrise, stands down through the worst of the afternoon, and comes back for an evening event, those split hours still stack on the same daily clock, so the heat schedule and the overtime plan have to be drawn together.

A three-day, 2,400-attendee conference at the Palm Springs Convention Center in January, the heart of this market's season.
