In California, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and Cal. Labor Code §3700 (workers' compensation coverage requirement). California's overtime line sits at hour eight of a single workday (time and a half) and hour twelve (double time), with seventh-consecutive-day overtime layered over the 40-hour week (Labor Code §510); a festival Saturday that starts with a 6:30 a.m. show-field call and ends after the evening concert is a daily-overtime problem before it is ever a weekly one.
