Church Street Marketplace is that core, four blocks of brick between Main and Pearl with no vehicle access, about eighty storefronts, and the festival spine of downtown. The Waterfront sits downhill to the west on Lake Champlain, ECHO Leahy Center, Waterfront Park, the ferry dock, and the bike path. The University District climbs the hill to the east, UVM, Patrick Gymnasium, Champlain College, and the UVM Medical Center. The South End runs south down Pine Street, the arts and brewery district that stages a lot of the gear. And Essex Junction lies about fifteen minutes northeast, home to the Champlain Valley Exposition, the region's fairground and expo hall.

A one-day craft-beer festival on the lake at Waterfront Park, nine thousand through the gate by dusk, is really a timeline more than a headcount. Thirty-four crew cover it. The build opens at seven with nine general-labor hands putting up the stage, the tents, and the pour stations along the water while the park is still empty. Through the early afternoon the gate and wristband crew clock in, seven of them scanning at the Church Street feed, an eight-person pour-and-ID crew takes the Vermont brewery lines and the token booths, and seven on crowd control take the pit, the lakefront edge, and the bike path.
