Compliance

Minnesota Employment Compliance

Minnesota's state minimum wage is $11.41/hr, but Minneapolis operates at $16.37/hr as of January 2026. Payroll must map precisely to work location — an employee working a Mall of America event in Bloomington (outside Minneapolis city limits) gets the state rate; a Minneapolis Convention Center event gets the city rate. Alcohol server training is recommended statewide; Minneapolis requires annual training compliance for licensed premises. Non-compliance triggers MNLCC enforcement.

Megan Hayward on staffing Minnesota

“The State Fair question comes up every year — can you staff it? My answer is always yes, but not the way you think. The State Fair isn't a fill order. It's a dedicated engagement. 12 days, 1.2 million visitors, and exhibitor staffing needs that shift by the hour. We pre-build the Fair roster in July and it's a different team than our general Minneapolis bench. The other thing about Minnesota that clients from warmer markets don't always factor in: the indoor event season here is aggressive specifically because it has to be. When it's -20°F outside, every major event in the state moves indoors, and the convention centers, arenas, and hotel ballrooms all run at capacity. Our crew doesn't slow down in winter — that's actually our busiest stretch.”

Minnesota FAQ

Minnesota Event Staffing FAQ

Answers to the questions Minnesota event organizers ask most.

How quickly can TempGuru staff a Minnesota event?

Twin Cities (Minneapolis and Saint Paul) orders fill within 24–48 hours for standard events. Minnesota State Fair requires dedicated booking — contact us by July for August/September dates. Rochester and Duluth fill within 3–5 business days.

Are TempGuru workers in Minnesota W-2 employees?

Yes. Every TempGuru worker in Minnesota is a W-2 employee. Minneapolis's $16.37/hr city minimum applies to all work performed within Minneapolis city limits — payroll maps to the work location. State rate ($11.41/hr) applies to suburban markets. TempGuru handles both without exception. 1099 misclassification transfers payroll tax liability and workers' comp exposure to the event organizer — an audit risk that W-2 classification eliminates.

What certifications are required in Minnesota?

Alcohol server training is required annually for Minneapolis licensed premises staff. Statewide, server training is strongly recommended. TempGuru verifies training compliance before assignment on all Minnesota alcohol service roles.

What does event staffing cost in Minnesota?

Rates run $24–$38/hr. Minneapolis is Tier 1. Saint Paul and Bloomington are mid-tier. Rochester and Duluth are base-rate. All rates include W-2 payroll, workers' comp, and liability. Published after a 15-minute scope call.
