Kentucky Event Staffing

The Bluegrass State Edition
Event Staffing

Derby week, BOURBON-COUNTRY event staffing.

The Kentucky Derby is the most-watched horse race on earth — 170,000 spectators at Churchill Downs, thousands more in hospitality tents, sponsor suites, and Millionaires Row. Kentucky's event calendar revolves around the Derby, but bourbon festivals, SEC athletics, and a thriving Louisville convention market fill every other week. TempGuru staffs 6 Kentucky markets under one W-2 contract.

"Derby week is not a staffing job — it's a hospitality deployment. Churchill Downs, Millionaires Row, and 170,000 fans. We've done it. We're ready for yours."

Kentucky Employment Compliance

Kentucky follows the federal $7.25/hr minimum wage with no state increase. The Kentucky ABC administers STAR (Server Training in Alcohol Regulations) certification, required for all servers at licensed establishments. STAR certification must be completed within 30 days of employment. The Kentucky ABC issues temporary license extensions for special events, and all alcohol-serving staff at those events require valid STAR certification. Louisville's local regulations add permit requirements for large outdoor events at waterfront venues.

From Megan

Founder's notes on staffing Kentucky.

Megan Hayward

I have never staffed anything quite like Derby week. It's not one event — it's two weeks of overlapping hospitality obligations across Louisville, with everything from mint julep service in the infield to black-tie dinner service in Millionaires Row happening simultaneously. The clients who do it right book us in February. The ones who call in April get our secondary roster. Derby week is where reputations are built and broken, and our Louisville crew has earned theirs. The Keeneland spring meet in April is a quieter version of the same energy — upscale, horse-country formal, and beautifully managed by a Lexington crew that understands what thoroughbred racing hospitality looks like. Kentucky is a serious event state, and it rewards serious preparation.
