Ventura Event Staffing

TempGuru · Ventura, CA · Updated July 2026
A compact beach downtown that hosts county-sized events: the fair, the relocated strawberry festival, and the boats to Channel Islands National Park all leave from here.
Scroll. It gets specific.01The Ground Truth
Ventura is where the county's biggest events actually land.
The county fair runs twelve days on a beachfront fairground a mile from Main Street. The California Strawberry Festival moved here from Oxnard. The boats to Channel Islands National Park leave from the harbor. Ventura is a city of about a hundred thousand that repeatedly hosts crowds sized for the whole county, and the staffing question is surge: scaling a small market's crew pool up for county-scale weeks, then back down.
Quick Answer
Ventura event roles bill $36 to $42 an hour for general labor, registration, and guest services; team leads run $46 to $52, brand ambassadors $52.50 to $59.50, and specialized bar and AV work up to $72.50. One all-in W-2 number per role, with workers' comp, liability, payroll taxes, and California's daily and seventh-day overtime already inside it.
Standard orders confirm in 24 to 48 hours against a 3 to 4 week booking window. The exception is fairgrounds surge weeks: the twelve-day county fair (July 29 to August 9 in 2026) and the two-day Strawberry Festival each May claim the regional pool early, so dates touching those windows book first. Rush coverage moves in 2 to 3 days at a premium.
02The Map
A fairground on the sand, a Main Street two blocks up.
The Ventura County Fairgrounds at Seaside Park is the gravitational center: a beachfront ground at 10 West Harbor Boulevard that hosts the twelve-day fair, the relocated Strawberry Festival, Oktoberfest, concerts, and a year-round calendar of shows. Two blocks up the hill, downtown Main Street runs a different scale entirely: the Majestic Ventura Theater booking shows into next winter on Chestnut Street, Mission Basilica San Buenaventura holding the corridor's historic anchor as an active parish, and a street-fair tradition that closes Main Street every Fourth of July.
Southeast along the water, Ventura Harbor works as the gateway to Channel Islands National Park, with the park's visitor center and the Island Packers boats both on Spinnaker Drive and Harbor Village's restaurants and seasonal celebrations around them. The pier and Promenade, the oldest pier in California, tie the shoreline together and stage open-air events, tented fundraisers with no fixed back-of-house, right on the boardwalk.

Venue and logistics notes
Ventura County Fairgrounds at Seaside Park. Beachfront grounds hosting the fair's twelve-day run plus Oktoberfest, concerts, and auctions. Fair-week rosters rotate crews deliberately, because a gate team working every day of the run hits California's seventh-day premium mid-fair.
Majestic Ventura Theater, Chestnut Street. A working downtown concert house with a calendar booked months ahead. Show nights need security, bar, and floor crews on a repeating cadence, the steadiest recurring work in the market.
Mission Basilica San Buenaventura. Founded 1782, elevated to a basilica in 2020, and still an active parish on Main Street. Events on or near the mission block schedule around services and treat the site as a working church, not a backdrop.
The harbor and the pier. Harbor Village events share Spinnaker Drive with national-park boat traffic, and Promenade events like Pier Under the Stars run tented service for 800-plus guests with everything hand-carried onto the boardwalk.
03What We Staff
The work follows the surge, the stage, and the shoreline.
Fairground surges lead the year: the county fair's twelve days of gates, concessions support, and rodeo-night crowds, the Strawberry Festival's two-day food-festival throughput each May, and fall dates like Oktoberfest at the same grounds. Concert and theater crews run steadily at the Majestic and on the fairgrounds' show calendar.
Waterfront and street events carry the civic side: the Fourth of July Street Fair on Main Street, Promenade fundraisers by the pier, and Harbor Village's seasonal celebrations. Corporate meetings, weddings, and wine-country-adjacent private events fill the calendar between surges.
04The Math
Roster depth beats headcount on a twelve-day run.
The roster to the left spreads across the grounds: 30 billable, 3 team leads covering zones at about 9 staff each, floaters held for heat and gate surges. Guest flow across the site, not the headcount, decides where the crew are needed.
05The Clock
The fairgrounds set the calendar; the theater keeps the beat.
Book early and you lock the crew and the rate. Ventura's year is built around fairground surges: the twelve-day county fair from July 29 to August 9, 2026 is the deepest demand of the year, the relocated California Strawberry Festival adds a two-day spike each May, and Oktoberfest and fall concerts keep the same beachfront grounds working, while the Majestic's show calendar and harbor events hold the steady floor.
06The Rate
Ventura-coast pricing with the fair-week math done first.
Ventura prices on the same coastal tier as Oxnard, its labor-market twin nine miles down the 101, on California's $16.90 state floor since neither the city nor the county writes its own wage. The number that separates a good Ventura quote from a bad one is duration math: a twelve-day fair run or a two-day festival spike triggers daily overtime and seventh-consecutive-day premiums that have to be designed into the rotation before opening day. Every band below is one loaded W-2 figure per role with that arithmetic already done.
| Role | Rate | Min shift |
|---|---|---|
| General labor / setup | $36–$42/hr | 4 hrs |
| Registration | $36–$42/hr | 4 hrs |
| Guest services / ushers | $36–$42/hr | 4 hrs |
| Team leads / supervisors | $46–$52/hr | 4 hrs |
| Brand ambassadors | $52.50–$59.50/hr | 4 hrs |
| Specialized (bar, AV) | $56.50–$72.50/hr | 4 hrs |
California minimum wage is $16.90/hr. Every worker on this page is W-2, not 1099.

07The Fine Print
Twelve straight days is exactly what §510 was written for.
In California, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and California workers' compensation law (Labor Code §3700). Labor Code §510 pays time-and-a-half past 8 hours in a workday and double time past 12, and gives the seventh straight day of a workweek its own premium. A twelve-day fair run is where that arithmetic gets real: a gate crew that works every day of fair week hits the seventh-day premium in the middle of the run, so the roster is built with rotation in mind before opening day, not audited after closing day.
TempGuru runs every worker as a W-2 employee through a vetted partner agency that acts as the employer of record, carrying the workers' comp, general liability, and payroll taxes on each one. Classification and payroll responsibility sits with that employing agency; your own obligations can still depend on how you direct the work and on applicable law. As W-2 employees, the crew also fall under the workplace protections, including California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), that apply to the agency's other staff.
- W-2 employment, not 1099
- Workers' compensation insurance
- General liability coverage
- Payroll taxes: FICA, FUTA, SUTA
08The Model
One coordinator from opening gates to closing night.
You talk to one coordinator. Behind them, TempGuru pulls vetted W-2 crews from a roster of partner agencies and holds the relationships and the paperwork.
One coordinator, one crew, one invoice. By day eight of a twelve-day fair run, the question is not whether you have enough people, it is whether the rotation was built right on day one, so no gate crew quietly crosses California's seventh-day line mid-fair.
| The moment | Gig app | TempGuru |
|---|---|---|
| Someone no-shows at 6 a.m. | A support ticket | A coordinator with a name |
| Workers’ comp | Check the fine print | In the rate |
| Classification & payroll | Yours to sort out | The partner agency’s, as employer of record |
The difference shows up at 6 a.m., not in the demo.
09A Sample Plan
An illustrative staffing order.
Take a twelve-day fairground run at Seaside Park, staffed as supplemental crew alongside the operator's own people. Ten gate staff hold the entry lanes on a rotating roster, six guest services walk wayfinding and accessibility, six general labor reset the grounds each morning before gates, five hospitality crew back up the beer garden through rodeo nights, and three leads split gates, grounds, and hospitality on ten-hour days.
Thirty billable people on paper, more names than that on the roster, deliberately: the rotation is built so nobody works all twelve days, which keeps the seventh-day premium a choice instead of an accident. One coordinator holds the whole run, and one invoice closes it.
10Your Move
Staff the county's biggest weeks where they actually happen.
Ventura is the county's host city: the fair's twelve beachfront days, the Strawberry Festival that moved here, the boats to the Channel Islands, a Main Street that closes for its own parade. Staffing it well means surging a small market up to county scale and rotating crews so a long run stays legal and fresh. TempGuru does exactly that, vetted W-2 crews under one coordinator, on one invoice, from opening gates to closing night.
