07The Fine Print

In California, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and California workers' compensation law (Labor Code §3700). California owes overtime by the day: Labor Code §510 pays time-and-a-half past 8 hours in a workday, double time past 12, and premium pay on a seventh straight day.
