02The Map

The clusters are compact and easy to read. Downtown sits right at the river, where the El Paso Convention Center and Southwest University Park share a couple of blocks, the ballpark built on the old city-hall lot because land runs scarce this close to the line. UTEP climbs the slope just northwest, and the Sun Bowl and the Don Haskins Center anchor the campus at the foot of the Franklin Mountains. The El Paso County Coliseum runs the rodeo and touring dates east of downtown, and the far East Side past the airport and Fort Bliss keeps growing out into the desert.
Two things shape every call sheet here, and neither is the venue. First is the border. The commercial crossings to Ciudad Juarez, the Bridge of the Americas and the Ysleta-Zaragoza bridge, run trucks and crews on fixed daytime hours, so anyone or anything coming from the south is timed to the crossing, not the clock on the wall. Second is the desert. El Paso is dry heat and high sun at close to four thousand feet, with a late-summer monsoon that throws afternoon dust and wind, so outdoor calls carry sun cover and a wind plan instead of the humidity rotation a Gulf city would run. And the whole market keeps Mountain Time, an hour off the rest of Texas, which we build into every out-of-town client's schedule.

Venue and logistics notes
El Paso Convention Center, downtown. The Judson F. Williams Convention Center anchors downtown a few blocks off the river. Freight loads from the dock, the badge desk runs bilingual for binational shows, and stage crew set up ahead of the downtown morning build.
UTEP, the Sun Bowl, and the Don Haskins Center. The 45,971-seat Sun Bowl and the Don Haskins arena sit on the UTEP campus against the Franklin Mountains. Bowl week and game days run credentialed gates and controlled lots, so build a screening buffer before doors and start call times early.
Southwest University Park. The downtown ballpark next to the Convention Center, home of the Chihuahuas and Locomotive FC, scales its concourse and gate crews to the doors-open surge, and summer dates carry sun cover well into the evening.
The bridges and the County Coliseum. Commercial crossings to Ciudad Juarez run daytime hours, so crews and freight from the south are timed to the bridge. The El Paso County Coliseum east of downtown runs the rodeo and touring concerts on its own load-in and parking maps.

Conventions and cross-border business come next, the manufacturing and supply-chain shows that fill the El Paso Convention Center because Juarez runs one of the largest maquiladora bases on the border.
Concerts and touring work the Don Haskins Center and the County Coliseum, rodeo, fairs, and cultural events run the Coliseum and the downtown plaza, and corporate, military, and gala dates round out the year, with Fort Bliss keeping a steady base of official and family events on the East Side.

In Texas, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and Texas workers' compensation law.

Picture a binational manufacturing expo at the El Paso Convention Center: three days, two halls, about nine thousand badges through the doors, and exhibitors crossing from Juarez every morning. The order builds off the dock.
