Carnival was born here in 1703, and it is still the defining staffing event: in 2026 more than 40 parades rolled downtown between January 30 and Fat Tuesday, February 17. For those three weeks the barricade line is the venue, and every crew works around street closures the mystic societies set. The rest of the year belongs to the riverfront: a 317,000-square-foot convention center, a cruise homeport, and a working Gulf port.

02The Map
A riverfront city that works in one direction.
Downtown Mobile backs up against water. The Mobile River and the bay hem in the east side, so the LoDa riverfront blocks hold nearly everything at once: the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center with its 100,000 square feet of exhibit halls, the 1,921-seat Saenger Theatre on Lower Dauphin, the Alabama Cruise Terminal where Carnival Cruise Line turns ships year-round, and the parade barricade lines of Carnival season. Midtown and the Government Street corridor carry the parade approaches and the gala circuit, while west Mobile holds The Grounds fairgrounds and, twenty minutes out, Hancock Whitney Stadium on the South Alabama campus.
Two constraints shape every plan. During Carnival, downtown streets close on the krewes' schedule, so crew staging happens inside the barricade map, not around it. And from June through November, the Gulf writes the second calendar: every outdoor build carries a named weather hold. Cross-bay work at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park adds the tunnels, the only way through to Battleship Parkway.

Venue and logistics notes
Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center. Riverfront docks feed 100,000 square feet of exhibit hall. Move-ins share Water Street with cruise-terminal traffic on turnaround days, so call times work the ship schedule as much as the show schedule.
The parade routes, downtown. Carnival closes the grid on the societies' timetable. Crews stage inside the barricade map before lockdown; a worker on the wrong side of the route at roll time is out of the event.
Saenger Theatre, Lower Dauphin. A 1,921-seat 1927 house run by Oak View Group for the city. Tight historic-district load-in with no dock apron to spare, and ushers and bar staff scaled to a full house.
Hancock Whitney Stadium and Battleship Parkway. Senior Bowl week fills the 25,450-seat USA stadium in the same window as Carnival. USS Alabama's park grounds sit across the river via the tunnels, so cross-bay calls budget the crossing.
03What We Staff
What Mobile actually orders.
Festivals and parades lead the book, Carnival above all: barricade crews, crowd management, hospitality for balls and viewing stands, and next-morning cleanup across three weeks of parades. Conventions and trade shows run the Outlaw Center's exhibit halls with registration, floor crews, and freight hands.
Sports means Senior Bowl week and South Alabama football at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Corporate and port-economy events track the maritime and supplier calendar, dinners and meetings that follow the shipping channel. The fall fair at The Grounds closes the year with ten straight days of gate, ride-queue, and concessions staffing.

05The Clock
Fat Tuesday is a deadline, not a date.
Book early and you lock the crew and the rate. Mobile's peak is Carnival: 40-plus parades between late January and Fat Tuesday, with Senior Bowl week at Hancock Whitney Stadium landing inside the same stretch. The Greater Gulf State Fair adds a ten-day fall spike at The Grounds, and from June through November every outdoor date is planned against the hurricane forecast.

One rate per role, parade week or the week after.
Mobile pricing is one all-in number per role, and it refuses to surge. The barricade crew on a Joe Cain Sunday bills the same published rate as a Tuesday trade-show floor crew, with W-2 wages, workers' comp, and liability already inside the figure. Carnival changes the booking window, never the rate card, and the invoice at the end matches the sheet you approved.

07The Fine Print
A 1099 parade crew is a claim waiting for a float.
In Alabama, the expensive shortcut is paying event staff as 1099 contractors: back taxes, penalties, and joint-employer liability under federal FLSA and Alabama Workers' Compensation Act (Code of Ala. Title 25, Ch. 5).

09A Sample Plan
An illustrative staffing order.
Take one parade Saturday in Carnival season, tens of thousands along the downtown route. Eight general labor set barricades and viewing stands from 6 a.m., before the grid starts closing. Twelve crowd crew take the route line and crossings at 10, hospitality staffs the stands and sponsor tents by 11, and three leads each own a segment of the route on the radio through the last float and the sweep behind it.
The plan's one hard rule is geography: everyone is staged inside the barricade map before lockdown, because after noon nobody crosses the route in either direction. Twenty-eight billable people, one order, one invoice after the street reopens.
